Heat pump versus panel heater: the practical difference

A panel heater creates heat from electricity at the unit itself. It is a straightforward electric resistance heater: electricity goes in, and heat comes out. They are slim, quiet, and usually easy to mount on a wall.

A heat pump works differently. It uses electricity to move heat from outside air into the building. Even on a cool Waikato day, there is usable heat in the air. Do not compare heater wattage alone

Panel heaters provide gentle radiant and convective heat. They are generally silent, which can make them suitable for a quiet bedroom, consulting room or office. Their warmth is localised, though, and it can take time for a larger room to feel consistently comfortable.

Heat pumps move air with a fan, so there is some indoor-unit sound. Modern units are quiet at normal settings, but placement still matters in bedrooms and meeting rooms. Their biggest comfort advantage is circulation: warm air reaches more of the room, and most systems can warm a space much faster than a panel heater.
